This course is an introduction to the study of American culture. Our exploration begins in 1920 and ends in the current moment. As we survey this period, we will apply the interdisciplinary methods of American civilization to a broad range of topics and texts. Topics will include the role of race, class, and gender in shaping American identity, as well as the impact of popular culture, mass media, technology, and social reform on American life. Texts will include traditional literary documents, along with artifacts from the fields of music, art and architecture, broadcast media, and film. Web assignments and occasional screenings will supplement written materials.
